Australia offers a number of options for skilled workers from all over the world to come to Australia and work. Some of these options are country specific i.e. your home country while some are directly related to the skills you have and the requirement of these skills in Australian industry.

Who is eligible?

eligiblity for this visa category is governed by the visa subclass you are applying for.

Temporary Graduate Visa

subclass 485

This is a temporary visa that allows international students to live, study and work in Australia after finishing study.

There are 2 streams under this visa:

  • Graduate work Stream
  • Post-Study work Stream

Graduate Work Stream

this is for international students who have recently graduated with skills and qualifications that are relevant to certain occupations in Australia.

Post-Study Work Stream

this is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution.

You must:

  • either be the main holder of a current student visa, or
  • held a student visa within the past 6 months before your application
  • nominate 1 occupation from MLTSSL
  • have a degree, diploma or trade qualification closely related to this occupation
  • be assessed by relevant assessing authority

You must:

have been  granted your first student visa to Australia or or after 05 November 2011. You must also:

  • either be the main holder of a current student visa, or
  • held a student visa within the past 6 months before your application
  • have completed an eligible degree.

if you have completed a diploma or a trade qualification, you are not eligible for this visa catgeory.

Eligibility

Age

you must be under 50 years of age

Health requirement

you and any family members who apply for this visa with you must meet Australia’s health requirement. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

English language

you must either provide an evidence of your English language skills when you apply for this visa or show that you hold a valid passport from UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or Republic of Ireland.

Generally the evidence is an English language test result. e.g. IELTS, PTE, TOEFL etc. The test results must not be more than 3 years old and you must have scored an overall score of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.0 in each component in IELTS (or equivalent).

Previous Visa Cancellations & Refusals

you might not be eligible for this visa if you have had  a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.

Study Requirement

in the past 6 months, you must have been awarded at least one degree, diploma or trade qualification, and:

  • your course was a CRICOS-registered course
  • you successfully completed all course requirements
  • your study was in English
  • you completed your course as a result of at least two academic years (92 weeks) study
  • you were physically in Australia for at least 16 calendar months to complete the study
  • you held an Australian study visa

Character requirement

you and any family members who apply for this visa with you must meet Australia’s character requirement. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

Health Cover (OVHC)

you and your family members must maintain adequate health insurance for the entire visa duration.

this health cover is called OVHC – Overseas Visitor Health Cover and is only available from an approved Australian health insurance provider.

Visa

Visa cost starts from AUD 1,650. You can include family members in this visa application, but an additional charge applies for each of the members included in the application.

Application

you must be in Australia when you apply and at the time of the decision.

Processing

The Department of Home Affairs provides below time frames for this visa category:

  • 75% of applications in 4 months
  • 90% of applications in 4 months

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

subclass 482

This is a temporary visa that allows an employer to sponsor a skilled worker to fill in a position where the employer cannot find a suitable Australian employee.

There are 4 streams under this visa:

  • Short-term Stream
  • Medium-term Stream
  • Labour Agreement Stream
  • Subsequent Entrant

Short-term Stream

this stream allows you to work in Australia for 2 years. You must:

  • be nominated to work in an eligible short-term skilled occupation
  • have at least 2 years relevant experience in the nominated occupation
  • have a relevant skills assessment
  • work only for your sponsor
  • have scored a minimum overall score of 5.0 with a minimum score of 4.5 in each module of IELTS (or equivalent)

Medium-term Stream

this stream allows you to work in Australia for 4 years. You must:

  • be nominated to work in an eligible medium & long-term skilled occupation
  • have at least 2 years relevant experience in the nominated occupation
  • have a relevant skills assessment
  • work only for your sponsor
  • have scored a minimum overall score of 5.0 with a minimum score of 4.5 in each module of IELTS (or equivalent)

Labour Agreement Stream

this stream allows you to work in Australia for 4 years. You must:

  • be nominated to work in a specified occupation under the terms of a labour agreement
  • have at least 2 years relevant experience in the nominated occupation
  • have a relevant skills assessment
  • work only for your sponsor
  • have scored a minimum overall score of 5.0 with a minimum score of 4.5 in each module of IELTS (or equivalent)

Subsequent Entrant

this stream allows you to live, work & study in Australia for the duration of the primary applicant’s visa length. You must:

  • be a partner or dependent of a subclass 482 or 457 visa holder
  • be nominated by primary visa holder’s sponsor in writing

The Department of Home Affairs must approve the sponsorship.

Health requirement

you and any family members who apply for this visa with you must meet Australia’s health requirement. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

Skill Assessment

you must be able to provide a copy of your skill assessment with your application.

Work and holiday Visa

subclass 462

This is a temporary visa that allows young adults to enjoy an extended holiday in Australia and to work as well.

You can stay in Australia for up to 12 months on this visa.

There are 3 categories for this visa:

  • First Work & Holiday Visa
  • Second Work & Holiday Visa
  • Third Work & Holiday Visa

Important

From 01st July 2019, holder of this visa who carry out 6 months of specified work in regional areas while on their 2nd Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) or Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) may be eligible to apply for 3rd visa.

The 6 month work must all be performed after 01 July 2019, so applications cannot be lodged before January 2020.

Who is eligible?

you must be a citizen of and hold a valid passport from one of the eligible countries below:

Argentina, Austria, Chile, People’s Republic of China, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Peru, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay, USA, Vietnam

You must

  • be 18 to 30 years old
  • not be accompanied by dependent children

First Work & Holiday Visa

this visa allows people 18 to 30 years old to have an extended holiday and work in Australia

Second Work & Holiday Visa

this visa allows holders of First Work & Holiday Visa to extend their stay in Australia.

you must have held First Work & Holiday visa and entered Australia on this visa and completed 3 months of specified work on your First Work & Holiday Visa.

Third Work & Holiday Visa

this visa allows holders of Second Work & Holiday Visa to extend their stay in Australia.

you must have held Second Work & Holiday visa and entered Australia on this visa and completed 6 months of specified work on your Second Work & Holiday Visa.

Eligibility

Education Requirement

for most countries listed above, you must either:

  • have a tertiary qualification or
  • have completed 2 years of undergraduate study 

for Chile, you must:

  • have tertiary qualification or
  • have completed 3rd year of undergraduate study

for Israel, you must hold a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education and have either:

  • completed military service or
  • be legally exempt from military service

for Thailand, you must either:

  • have a diploma or
  • have a degree

for USA, you must have a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education

Letter of Support

you must provide a letter of support from your government if you are from any of the below countries:

Czech Republic, Ecuador, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Peru, Poland, San Marino, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay, Vietnam

you don;t need a letter of support if you are from one of the below countries:

Argentina, Austria, Chile, Israel, People’s republic of China, Portugal, Spain, Singapore, USA

English Language

you must have at least functional English

Funding requirements

you must have enough money to support yourself in Australia and to depart Australia at the end of your visa.

Tax & Superannuation

you must pay taxes while you work in Australia on this visa.

your employer also must pay superannuation into your super fund. You can access your superannuation when you leave Australia.

Country Caps

each program year, a limited number of places are offered for First Work & Holiday visa for each country.

once this limit is reached for a specific country, no further applications are accepted for that program year.

Visa cost starts from AUD 485. You can neither include family members in this visa application nor you can have dependent children while you are in Australia on this visa.

First Work & Holiday Visa – you must be outside Australia when you apply and at the time of decision

Second Work & Holiday Visa – you can be in or outside Australia to apply for this visa. If you apply outside Australia, you must be outside Australia at the time of decision. If you apply in Australia, you must be in Australia at the time of decision.

Third Work & Holiday Visa – you can be in or outside Australia to apply for this visa. If you apply outside Australia, you must be outside Australia at the time of decision. If you apply in Australia, you must be in Australia at the time of decision.

Processing

Working Holiday Visa

subclass 417

This is a temporary visa that allows young adults to enjoy an extended holiday in Australia and to work as well.

Skilled Recognised Graduate Visa

subclass 476

This is a temporary visa that allows recent engineering graduates to live, work and study in Australia for up to 18 months.

You must have completed an engineering degree or higher qualification from one of the specified institutions.

The completed education must not be more than 2 years old and you must be less than 31 years of age.

Eligibility

Engineering Qualification

you must have completed an engineering degree or higher qualification in the last 2 years from a specified institution, e.g.:

  • bachelors degree
  • masters degree
  • doctoral degree
  • postgraduate diploma

The qualification must be in one of the below engineering disciplines:

  • civil
  • structural
  • chemical
  • environmental
  • electrical & electronics
  • mechanical, production & plant
  • mining & material
