Reunite with your family in Australia!!

Parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents can apply to migrate to Australia. You must be an Australian permanent resident and have lived in Australia for at least two years , in order to be an eligible sponsor. Your parents must also meet ‘Balance of Family Test’ in order to qualify for parent visa. 

Your parents can apply for permanent or temporary parent visa sub classes.

Who is eligible?

You may apply for a parent visa if your child is:

  • an Australian citizen or
  • an Australian permanent resident or
  • an eligible New Zealand citizen

You must also:

  • meet the balance of family test requirement i.e. 50% or more of your children live in Australia or 50% or more of your children live permanently in Australia than in any other country.
  • provide an assurance of support which is a legal document confirming that you receive financial support in certain circumstances so you do not have to rely on social security payments. In most cases this document will be provided by your child who is sponsoring you.

subclass 870

This temporary visa lets a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years.

You must be sponsored by a Parent Sponsor. The sponsor needs to apply to become an approved Parent sponsor before the visa application can be lodged.

You must be outside Australia when Department of Home Affairs makes a decision on your application.

Eligibility

Parent Sponsor

you must have an approved Parent Sponsor to apply for this visa. The sponsor must be able to provide evidence of an annual gross income of AUD 83,000 or more.

The Department of Home Affairs must approve the sponsorship.

Health requirement

you and any family members who apply for this visa with you must meet Australia’s health requirement. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

Eligible

you must be:

  • the biological, adoptive, step parent or parent-in-law of the Parent Sponsor
  • at least 18 years old

there is neither a requirement for balance of family test or assurance of support for this visa.

Character requirement

you and any family members who apply for this visa with you must meet Australia’s character requirement. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

Funding Arrangements

you must have sufficient funds available to support yourself while in Australia.

Previous Visa Cancellations & Refusals

you might not be eligible for this visa if you have had  a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.

Genuine Temporary Entrant

you must have sufficient funds available to support yourself while in Australia.

Health Insurance (OVHC)

you must maintain adequate health insurance for the entire visa duration.

this health cover is called OVHC – Overseas Visitor Health Cover and is only available from an approved Australian health insurance provider.

Visa

Visa cost starts from:

  • AUD 5,000 for 3 years
  • AUD 10,000 for 5 years

You cannot include family members in this visa application.

The payment for this visa is required in 2 installments. First installment is required at the time of the application. The 2nd installment is required when the Department of Home Affairs asks.

Application

you must be outside Australia at the time of visa application.

you can be in or outside Australia at the time of decision.

Processing

Processing times are not available for this visa category yet, as being relatively new.

It is expected that average time frames will be available around late Oct 2019.

Offshore Parent Visa

subclass 103

This is a permanent visa that allows parents to live in Australia if their child is an Australian, Eligible New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. Applicants for this visa may have to wait many years before being granted a visa, as there are limited number of places available each year.​

You must be outside Australia when Department of Home Affairs makes a decision on your application.

For 2019-20, the cap for this visa category has been set at 7,371 places. Note: These places are allocated to the entire Visa Category and not just this subclass.

Aged Parent Visa

subclass 804

This is a permanent visa similar to Parent Visa subclass 103, however only eligible for applicants who are eligible for the Australia age pension.

You must be in Australia when Department of Home Affairs makes a decision on your application.

This is a temporary visa that allows parents to live in Australia if their child is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. However application charge for this visa is significantly higher than other parent visas.

This visa  allows applicant to live in Australia for up to 2 years. By choosing the Subclass 173 option first and then applying for the Subclass 143 Visa option later, you could spread the costs of the Contributory Parent Visa over those two years.

subclass 143

This is a permanent visa that allows parents to live in Australia if their child is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. However application charge for this visa is significantly higher than other parent visas.

It is important to note that the temporary subclass 173 visa is not a prerequisite for the permanent subclass 143 visa.

The Department of Home Affairs must approve the sponsorship.

The Department of Home Affairs does not provide any specific time period within which visa applications will be processed under this category. However, on average, applications for this visa can take anywhere from 3-4 years.

Contributory Aged Parent (temporary) Visa

subclass 884

This is a temporary visa that allows the older/aged parents to live in Australia for up to two years. This visa cannot be extended or renewed

If the parents want to stay in Australia permanently, they can apply for the permanent Contributory Aged Parent 864 visa after the temporary 884 visa is expired.

The cost is significantly higher for this visa category, but you can split this cost by applying for temporary 884 visa first.
